At Christmas, it’s good to get the Christmas present you want. But it’s also nice to have a few other stocking fillers and little surprise presents to open. So each week between now and the special day, your shopping blog will be featuring a range of inexpensive but useful gift ideas.

Today’s gift ideas are for the golfer.

1. Golf balls always come in handy and a box of three golf balls is not expensive. But make sure to get the right type, as many golfers are very particular and use only the one model.

2. A golf range finder is a perfect practice aid and does what it says. It lets you measure exactly how far away you are from the pin, and though may not be allowable in competitions will be invaluable to get your golfer used to estimating distances. Simple telescope-based models come in at £20 or less, though naturally the more features they have, the more they cost.

3. A golf club brush set is just the thing for winter golf. Club heads can get very messy and a little set of brushes to fit in the golf bag will keep them in tip top condition.

4. Scoring can be a bit of a chore, with scorecards and pencils never being there when you want them. But a digital electronic scorecard will make lost pencils a thing of the past. Some even have a touch screen for easy operation, and take all the hassle out of keeping score.

5. And finally I spotted a neat little laser putting aid. It clips on to your putter and guides your stroke to make sure the ball goes in first time. Again, not for competition use, but used in practice it’s sure to improve your game.
